There are many different types of hearing loss. One example of a symptom of hearing loss is muffled hearing in one ear. The person may feel that the effected ear is clogged. Any hearing loss should prompt a visit to the physician for diagnosis and treatment.

A possible cause of muffled hearing in one ear is a blockage of earwax in the effected ear. If the person suspects that the hearing loss is caused by earwax buildup, the individual should resist the urge to use a cotton swab to try to remove the earwax. Doing so may push the earwax even further into the ear canal. Using an earwax removal kit or removal by a physician is better.

One condition that can cause muffled hearing in one ear is commonly called glue ear. Glue ear is characterized by a buildup of fluid trapped in the ear. This fluid blocks the transmission of sound from the outer ear to the inner ear. It can cause mild hearing loss to deafness in the affected ear. The degree of hearing loss is related to the thickness of the fluid. One or both ears may be affected.

The muffled hearing may be caused by a perforated eardrum. Perforation of the eardrum can occur from infection or injury. The physician may consider this potential cause when identifying the cause of the muffled hearing. A perforated eardrum often heals on its own, but significant damage to the eardrum may need to be surgically repaired. A current ear infection can also cause the muffled hearing. If an infection is present, the doctor may prescribe an antibiotic.

A noncancerous growth in the ear canal can compromise the hearing in the effected ear. This can cause muffled hearing in the ear. A bony growth can result from repeated exposure to cold water and cold air. An acoustic neuroma is a noncancerous tumor on the auditory nerve. This condition can cause hearing loss in the effected ear.

When an individual experiences hearing loss, they should consult a physician so that the cause of the hearing loss and proper treatment can be determined. Seeking medical care at the onset of hearing loss may prevent the hearing loss from being permanent.
